On this page, The Parrot's Perch will highlight parrot rescues that have very specific special needs, due to a particular circumstance. Currently, Dee's Haven Parrot Rescue is helping Jessie, a Sulfur Crested Cockatoo, and needs help with his ongoing, expensive vet bills.
Donna Kristosik, founder of Dee's Haven Parrot Rescue, in Lexington, Georgia, rescued Jessie in the dead of winter. Donna was the sixteenth person, over a three-week period, called to help Jessie. She was the only one to respond. This special lady has also taken in four of my retired breeding cockatoos for sanctuary.

Jessie was living out in the wild for at least 3 weeks during the coldest part of winter. It is amazing that he survived! A wonderful gentleman put food out for him twice a day the whole time he was in the wild.
At the request of the gentleman that saved his life, the cockatoo was named Jessie, after his mother-in-law who passed away the day Jessie was caught. Jessie will be available for adoption after his evaluation period is over. He is fully feathered and just a gorgeous bird.
Jessie is now suffering some effects from being out in the cold for so long. He had frostbite and has lost several toes. Surgery was necessary.
Dee's Haven has received $325 in donations so far for Jessie. Here is an accounting of that money:
- $88.00 1st vet visit
- $40.00 2nd vet visit
- $52.00 prescriptions
- $300.00 surgery
- $12.00 prescription
- $7.00 prescription
- $22.00 prescription
- $35.00 collar
- $50.00 gauze, vet wrap, antibiotic ointment, telfa pads, gauze pads, cloth tape, betadine solution
- $30.00 towels, dog bed
- $22.00 prescription
- $40.00 gauze, vet wrap, pads
Total cost for Jessie's care to date: $698.00
As of May 6, 2010, Jessie continues to heal. He saw the vet on Tuesday and she was happy with his progress. One foot is unbandaged now and the other bandage and collar will come off soon. Hopefully everything will go well. We are going to start putting a couple of low perches back in his cage. We made some 1x6 padded perches for him so we'll see how that goes.
