Rescue Information

The parrot and pet bird overpopulation crisis is not as bad as the dog and cat problem...it is worse, due to their longevity, high intelligence, strong social needs and the fact that this issue is not in the publis's eye.

People everywhere are captivated by the exotic beauty of parrots. Their colorful feathers, their ability to speak and mimic sounds and their clown like antics are probably some of the reasons that parrots are ranked number three on the list of most popular pets in the world.

According to PIJAC, the pet bird population has skyrocketed with an increase of 244% between 1990 and 1996, while the numbers for dogs and cats remain the same. We are clearly in love with birds and our craving to have more and more of them is increasing.

Unfortunately though, our desire to have birds has a dark side. To satisfy our bird mania, millions of parrots are sold annually for the pet trade. Some of those birds are caught in the wild while others are captive bred in unnatural, over crowded warehouses…bird mills. Both circumstances ultimately lead birds to uncertain futures and more often than not tragic and painful lives.

If you are thinking about getting a bird, think about a rescue!
There are many wonderful birds in need of good loving homes in your local rescue or shelter. Please check my Links Page for local rescues, visit Avian Rescue Links or Google "parrot rescues" to find one in your area.
