Exotic
Bird Breeding
|
I
am a small top quality private parrot breeder
in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. My breeding
pairs of Cockatoos, Macaws and African Greys have
the upstairs of my house. With them having the
upstairs, they have the advantage of fresh air
and natural sunshine. They get to see the dawn
and dusk, the treetops filled with birds and appreciate
the rainfall. No basement birds here. They also
have their own stereo, on which I play nature
series CD's. Yes, they get only the best!
All
of my baby parrots are hand-raised by me. I believe
in leaving them in the nest with their parents
for the first 2 to 3 weeks. This is to allow the
parent birds to feed their young, because they
can provide their babies with natural gut bacterias,
immunities, and enzymes that we breeders cannot
duplicate as well as Mother Nature. This helps
ensure big healthy babies. Then I remove them
for hand-feeding, so each baby bird is given individual
attention and lots of tender loving care. This
ensures a sweet loving, affectionate, well adjusted,
happy youngster that will be a delight to their
owners. I never sell to pet shops because I want
my babies to go directly from my loving home to
their new loving home.

When
I have babies, they are raised downstairs, where
I give them constant care and attention. I have
two incubators, one for the eggs while they are
developing, then once they pip, they go into the
hatching incubator, because I decrease the temperature
and increase the humidity which helps them to
successfully hatch. Once they are out of their
shells, they go into a brooder to be hand-raised.
I have several brooders for the different stages
of growth to meet their needs.
My
baby birds are raised on the Kaytee Exact Baby
Bird Hand Feeding Formula through a syringe given
little bits at a time, so they can enjoy their
food and I can spend quality time nurturing them.
While I feed them I talk to them and stroke them
to begin socializing them.
I
like to let my baby parrots go to their new homes
when they are eating on their own, but still being
hand-fed, because I believe in VERY GRADUALLY
weaning them out. Baby greys can be forced weaned
at 10 weeks of age, but my babies enjoy being
hand-fed until approximately 16-20 weeks of age.
Cockatoos and macaws could be forced weaned at
12-16 weeks of age, but my babies enjoy being
hand-fed for 6 months to a year. It's healthy
for them physically and it's healthy for them
emotionally.

Usually
I have deposits on the babies before they're ready
to go to their new homes. I like the new parents
to come and visit about once a week. That way
the baby already knows you, a bond has already
formed and the transition goes smoothly. Most
people really enjoy taking pictures and videos
of their baby growing and developing. Most start
a baby scrapbook.
I
take great care in trying to match the right baby
parrot to the right person or family. Like different
species of dogs each having different personality
traits, parrots are likewise. Each species has
it's individual personality, and each bird also
has it's own individual personality. When perspective
buyers come to choose a baby, I put a towel on
the coffee table, with a box of baby toys and
put the babies on the coffee table so you can
sit on the sofa to play and interact with them.
This way you can get a feel for each babies' personality.
I always tell my people; your best match is the
one that keeps coming to you and showing interest
and curiosity in you. You won't go wrong when
you choose the one that chooses you.

Before
the baby parrots leave, included is a lengthy
consultation on all aspects of their care.
We discuss the cage, perches, toys, nutrition, proper
handling techniques, behavior, grooming, vets, and
much more. You also receive a folder chocked full
of information on all aspects of their care and
behaviors, along with a subscription form for Bird
Talk Magazine. If I get you off on the right start,
we avoid any possible problems in the future.
Also
included with my birds is a THREE WEEK written
health guarantee, a HATCH
CERTIFICATE with the names of the parents,
dates on when the egg was laid and hatched. If
the baby was hatched in the incubator, I save
the egg-shell to give to the new family. Many
people like to frame the Hatch Certificate and
the egg-shell to hang by the cage.
I
am always accessible to provide you with
personal care and support. I feel it is my responsibility
to do everything I can to make my babies' lives
happy since I was instrumental in their being
here. |
